Division 4 side Doveton Eagles will commemorate NAIDOC week by wearing specialised indigenous jumpers designed by one of their very own players.
It’s only Kobi Marks first year at the Doveton Eagles and the club approached after they had found it he has a background in art, to design this years indigenous jumpers. Marks was very happy with this opportunity and had a clear idea of what he wanted to do with the design.
Kobi’s main focus on the design of the jumpers was to have a way to show we all come from different backgrounds, groups, suburbs, teams… but we are all one together.
“You can see in the jumper there are little groups, because we all come from different backgrounds, places we grew up, different footy teams… and it shows that we are one together, we come as one big family to play for the same team,” Marks said.
This isn't the first time the Eagles are creating special indigenous jumpers, the club have done so in the past and always try and participate in any activities involving the community especially during special rounds where they can pay respects to the indigenous Australians.
Kobi is also designing special boots for the best on grounds from each team, the boots will also have an aboriginal artwork design.
The club will also sell the jumpers back to the players, “I’m sure the boys would want to buy their jumpers, it's a special jumper and a special occasion i'm sure everyone will jump on the opportunity.” Marks added.
The Doveton Eagles play Hampton Hammers at Power Reserve on Saturday with the first bounce scheduled for 2:15pm, due to a welcome to country and smoking ceremony being held.
