Mt Waverley unleashed an eight-goal second quarter to put Sandown out of business in their clash at Mayfield Reserve.
With coach Jarrod Wilkin in vintage touch and Taryn Dawson in everything, the Mountain Lions did enough damage in that quarter to win the game by 42 points.
They were outscored by the brave Cobras in the second half but the die was cast. Luke Galle (six goals) and Drew Macrae (five) shared the honours up forward for the winners, while for the Cobras, Mick Edwards, Steve Ritchie, Ciaran O’Shaughnessy and Matt Davie held their heads high.
