Round 7: Netball Review

By Chelsea Ryan

The 7th round of SFNL’s Netball competition has a lot of exciting things happening with a unique schedule of games so that clubs could enjoy their community functions and support their football teams.

Thursday brought a lovely Autumn evening for games at Olive Road.  Five matches were played at the Eumemmerring courts with teams travelling from East Brighton, Caulfield Frankston and South Yarra.  This allowed Springvale Districts to enjoy their Ladies Day Function on the Saturday.

A few more games were played at Olive Road on Saturday by Doveton Doves to allow them to play next to their home football ground for the club to support all their teams.

And finally a few games were held in St Kilda at the Peanut Farm. Mordialloc, Caulfield and St Paul’s McKinnon came down to play.  This meant that all of St Kilda City and St Paul’s McKinnon’s netball and football teams were playing at the same venue.  It was the Battle of the Saints!

A1 Division

Cheltenham (1) 50 defeated Aspendale Arrows (1) 33

The Aspensdale Arrows really came out guns blazing against Cheltenhamholding the lead 16 to 9 at quarter time.  Unfortunately is was downhill from there with Cheltenham having a cracking second quarter rising to be in front by 5 at half time and pushing it out from there. Goal Shooter Kelsey Dornau had a fantastic game, sealing the win with 10 goals in the final quarter.

Cheltenham sit on top of the ladder undefeated, along with Dingley who are just behind on goal percentage.

A super exciting and close game! 29 all at three quarter time with the Cranbourne Eagles, as player Jodie Holt put it ‘Fought really hard and chased every single ball’, getting the win by 2 points.  Caulfield did the best they could with players who has also played other games on Saturday, just letting it slip out of their hands in the last moments. A tremendous game and effort by both teams!

A3 Division

Aspendale Arrows (2) 40 defeated Cheltenham (3) 32

Both teams were on two wins of the season so far before this evenly matched game.  Cheltenham held a small lead up until the third quarter where Aspendale charged up to just sneak in front, leading by 1 going into the final quarter. Defence kicked it up a notch keeping Cheltenham at bay with only 4 goals in the final quarter to secure the 8 point win.  Aspendale would be very pleased with their performance this match pushing them up into third spot on the ladder.

A4 Division

South Yarra (2) 26 defeated Mordialloc (2) 25

Another exciting game was on our hands in A4. With strong offence and consistent shooting by Zoe Larrieu and Teah Stafrance, Mordialloc had a nice lead up to three quarter time.  Taking a while to settle into the game, South Yarra never gave up and were hot on the heels of Mordi.  Impressive work across the court in the final quarter shut down the attack of Mordialloc.  Smooth feeding into the circle got them goal opportunities which shooters followed though on, coming over the top of Mordialloc and getting the sweet victory by one point.
