Round 5 Review

SFNL footy and netball continued across the weekend, with plenty of big results, ladder movement and standout individual performances across the competition.
Before diving into the round, congratulations go to Bentleigh FNC and Murrumbeena FNC, who recently competed in the Community Cup for Community Bank, Bendigo Bank Murrumbeena across both football and netball.
Hodgson Reserve, Bentleigh, provided a strong setting for the day, with the opening of Bentleigh FNC’s brand new netball courts adding to the occasion alongside a number of close-finishing football matches.

 



 

Men’s Division 1
Dingley 13.14 (92) def Bentleigh 12.7 (79)
Dingley stayed undefeated at 5-0, but Bentleigh made the ladder leaders work for it in a 13-point result at Souter Reserve. The Dingoes had a clear ball-winning edge, finishing +88 disposals, +72 uncontested possessions, +23 marks and operating at 76 per cent disposal efficiency to Bentleigh’s 68 per cent. Bentleigh still generated five more inside 50s and won the clearance count 34-33, but Dingley’s cleaner use and outside spread kept them in control. Nathan Freeman was everywhere with 43 disposals, 13 contested possessions, six clearances, five inside 50s and 2.0, while Lachlan Benton had 30 disposals, seven clearances and a goal. For Bentleigh, Caleb Sheahan had 29 disposals, six clearances and a goal, while Thomas Dowsing kicked 2.1.
Narre Warren 19.10 (124) def Murrumbeena 11.9 (75)
Narre Warren kept pace with Dingley and Cheltenham in the top three, moving to 4-1 after a 49-point win over Murrumbeena. The Magpies dominated uncontested possession 251-163, marks 120-81 and inside 50s 58-31, while their ball use was sharp at 78 per cent disposal efficiency. Will Howe was the standout forward with 6.2 from 17 disposals, 11 marks and seven inside 50 marks. Julian Goerlitz had 28 disposals, 14 contested possessions, nine clearances and nine inside 50s, while Callum Porter finished with 36 disposals, 10 contested possessions, four clearances, seven inside 50s and a goal. Murrumbeena’s Edward Standish kicked 4.2 from 12 disposals and four marks inside 50.
Cheltenham 12.12 (84) def Cranbourne 8.8 (56)
Cheltenham stayed locked into third at 4-1, pulling away from Cranbourne by 28 points at Livingston Reserve. The Rosellas won disposals 354-314, contested possession 133-107, clearances 36-24 and inside 50s 53-34, turning that territory gap into eight more scoring shots. Ollie Moran was the main driver with 31 disposals, 10 contested possessions, six marks, four clearances, five inside 50s and 3.0. Dylan Weickhardt added 25 disposals, 13 contested possessions and eight clearances, while Charlie Brookes had 24 disposals, 10 marks, eight inside 50s and a goal. For Cranbourne, Marc Holt kicked 5.1 and Nicholas Russo had 24 disposals, eight inside 50s and a goal.

Springvale Districts 15.19 (109) def Hampton Park 10.9 (69)
Springvale Districts continued their climb into the top four, improving to 3-2 with a 40-point win over Hampton Park. The Demons won disposals 318-287, contested possession 148-135, clearances 42-29, marks 77-56 and inside 50s 54-48. Piva Wright was dominant again, finishing with 31 disposals, 17 contested possessions, 19 hit-outs, 14 clearances, nine inside 50s and 1.2. Erishmiilan Uthayakumar stayed hot in front of goal with 4.3 from 14 disposals and four marks inside 50, while George Angelopoulos kicked 3.2 from 20 disposals and four marks inside 50. Hampton Park had strong midfield numbers from Jayden Weichard, who had 26 disposals, 15 contested possessions, 11 effective tackles, six clearances and nine inside 50s.
St Paul’s McKinnon 17.18 (120) def Port Melbourne Colts 15.8 (98)
St Paul’s McKinnon broke through for their first win of the season, beating winless Port Melbourne Colts by 22 points in the highest-scoring game of the round. Port Melbourne won the clearances 41-33 and contested possession by two, but St Paul’s controlled the air with a huge 129-56 mark count, including 24 inside 50 marks to eight. Tyson Milne had 38 disposals, 12 marks, six inside 50s and eight rebound 50s, Liam Purcell kicked 3.3 from 18 disposals, 14 marks, five contested marks and seven marks inside 50, while Matthew Kreymborg kicked 4.2 from 17 disposals and 11 marks. For the Colts, Charlie Clarke had 39 disposals, 21 contested possessions, 10 clearances, eight inside 50s and 2.2, while Harvey Allan kicked 5.2.

Men’s Division 2
Highett 19.16 (130) def Caulfield Bears 7.7 (49)
Highett stayed unbeaten and on top of the Division 2 ladder, but had to respond after Caulfield jumped them early and led 26-18 at quarter time. From there, Highett took complete control, kicking 17.10 to 3.5 after the first break, including 6.1 in both the second and third quarters. Archie Grikis was the clear standout forward with seven goals, while Jacob Apted and Max Cuddon kicked three each. Highett move to 5-0, level with Mordialloc but ahead on percentage.
Mordialloc 15.16 (106) def Frankston Dolphins 6.8 (44)
Mordialloc also continued their perfect run, now sitting at 5-0, beating Frankston by 62 points at Overport Park. They held Frankston scoreless in the first quarter, led 52-15 at half time and had the game fully settled by three-quarter time at 90-29. Tom Kercheval kicked four goals, while Joshua Gibbins, Zachary Kercheval and Darcy Shannon added two each. The result keeps Mordialloc second, still only percentage behind Highett.
East Malvern 17.13 (115) def East Brighton 5.8 (38)
East Malvern kept their top-three gap intact with a 77-point win over winless East Brighton. They started fast with 6.3 to 2.0 in the first quarter, then broke the game open again in the third term, moving from 55-21 at half time to 88-24 at the final change. Isaac Morrisby continued his strong goalkicking form with six goals, while Trent Shannon kicked four and Hayden Chrzanowski added three. East Malvern remain third at 4-1.
Chelsea Heights 19.10 (124) def Doveton Doves 9.5 (59)
Chelsea Heights moved to 2-3 with a 65-point win over Doveton, using a major third-quarter burst to split the game open. Doveton were still within 14 points at half time, but Chelsea Heights kicked 7.2 to 1.1 in the third term to push the lead out to 53 by the final change. Nicholas Lee kicked five, Nathan Wright kicked four and Luke Smith added three. For Doveton, Nikolas Hilbert kicked three. Chelsea Heights now sit sixth, level on points with Hampton and Doveton.
Hampton 10.11 (71) def Keysborough 4.6 (30)
Hampton moved to 2-3 and into fifth with a 41-point win over Keysborough. Keysborough led by one point at quarter time, but Hampton took control through the middle two terms, kicking 8.7 to 1.2 across the second and third quarters to lead 64-18 at the final change. Madden Griffin and Daniel Jones kicked three each, while Henry Grenville added two. Keysborough remain 1-4 and sit at ninth.

Men’s Division 3
Heatherton 19.17 (131) def Berwick Springs 9.9 (63)
Heatherton stayed unbeaten and clear on top with a 68-point win over third-placed Berwick Springs. The Tonners led 28-16 at quarter time, 72-29 at half time and 101-49 at the final change, extending the margin across every break. Joel Cusack kicked three goals, while Euan Walker, Michael Rogers, Callum Cusack and Harry Jones kicked two each in another wide scoring spread. Ty Ellison kicked four for Berwick Springs, with Cooper Tracy and Hayden Stagg adding two each.
Black Rock 19.13 (127) def Endeavour Hills 12.10 (82)
Black Rock moved to 3-2 and into the top four with a 45-point win over Endeavour Hills. They started fast, leading 37-20 at quarter time, and broke the game open after half time, kicking 11.5 to 6.6 across the second half. Patrick Chin was the standout forward with seven goals, while Aaron Cloke kicked three and Ricky Wait, Jack Gibson, George Brayshaw and Brook Horsford kicked one each. Endeavour Hills had a spread of contributors, with Liam Costello, Hristos Millaras, Christopher Negrepontis and Branko Stevanovic all kicking multiple goals.
Lyndhurst 11.9 (75) def Hallam 8.6 (54)
Lyndhurst joined the 3-2 pack with a 21-point win over winless Hallam. Hallam led 15-13 at quarter time, but Lyndhurst kicked 4.1 in the second term to take a five-point half-time lead, then finished stronger with 4.6 to 1.1 after the main break. Noah East kicked three goals for Lyndhurst, while Jack Hazendonk and Jayrdy McGrath added two each. Nathan Kannenmeyer kicked three for Hallam, with Anthony Bernardo, Nathan Jerram and Matt Neve also hitting the scoreboard.
Skye 6.15 (51) def South Mornington 6.7 (43)
Skye held on by eight points in a low-scoring arm wrestle, moving to 3-2 and staying right in the middle of the finals mix. Scores were level at quarter time, before Skye led by 11 at half time and 20 at three-quarter time. South Mornington kicked 2.3 to 0.2 in the last quarter but could not close the gap. Stephen Hawkins kicked two for Skye, while Jordan Thomas, Aaron Philp, Josh Albert and Kai Skillen added one each. South Mornington had Sam Shaw kick two, with Joshua Bergin, Broden Bird, Jacob Rowler and Jackson Poole kicking one each.
Carrum Patterson Lakes 10.7 (67) def St Kilda City 8.9 (57)
Carrum Patterson Lakes picked up a 10-point win over second-placed St Kilda City, moving to 2-3 and putting a dent in St Kilda City’s top-end momentum. CPL led by one point at quarter time, five at half time and five at three-quarter time, before kicking 2.3 to 1.2 in the last term to hold the result. Liam Harris kicked four goals, while Thomas Reeves, Jack Bailey and Fedor Balabanov kicked three each. For St Kilda City, Louis Corless kicked one goal from his five player points, while Lachlan Harris kicked two.

St John’s OC stayed undefeated in their first SFNL season, coming from 22 points down at half time to beat Dandenong West by seven. Dandenong West led 24-15 at quarter time and 54-32 at the main break, before St John’s flipped the game with an 8.0 to 2.3 third quarter to lead 80-69 at the final change. Timothy Edwards was the match-winner in front of goal with nine majors, while Matthew Carnelley kicked two. For Dandenong West, Michael Dolan kicked five, with Remmi Faulkner-Wood and Corey Gillam adding three each.
Ashwood 27.18 (180) def Moorabbin Kangaroos 6.7 (43)
Ashwood moved to 4-1 with a 137-point win over Moorabbin, using a huge third quarter to break the game open. They led 68-35 at half time, then held Moorabbin scoreless in the third while adding 11.5 to push the margin out to 104 at the final change. Andrew Kaldawi kicked nine goals, while Harrison Shugg and Cameron Healy kicked six each. Ashwood now sit third, level on points with Dandenong West but behind on percentage.
Narre South Saints 14.9 (93) def Doveton Eagles 10.10 (70)
Narre South moved to 3-2 and fourth on the ladder after a 23-point win over Doveton Eagles. Doveton led by six points at half time, but Narre South kicked 5.3 to 2.1 in the third quarter to turn the game and then finished with 4.2 to 2.2 in the last. Nicholas Green and Tyler Booth kicked three goals each, while Thomas Fitzpatrick, Aleks Gwynne-Iglesias and Bayley Burton added two each. For Doveton, Joshua Johns, Adam Machnikowski and Mitchell Saly kicked two each.
Clayton 11.9 (75) def Lyndale 8.12 (60)
Clayton moved to 2-3 with a 15-point win over Lyndale, doing most of the damage early before holding off a second-half push. Clayton led 28-3 at quarter time, but Lyndale cut the margin to 14 at half time and seven at three-quarter time. Clayton then kicked 2.1 to 1.3 in the last quarter to steady the result. Zak Knight and Jackson Pasara kicked three each for Clayton, with Samuel Lunn adding two. Lyndale remain 1-4 in sixth.

Murrumbeena stayed on top of the ladder with a 109-point win over Narre South, lifting their percentage to 373.33. The Lions kept Narre South goalless and had a strong spread in attack, with Mia Fortune kicking five and Jessica Baguley kicking four. Peggy Martin and Tanisha Binios kicked two each, while Charlotte Trewarn, Ash Bertagno, Raquel Luntz and Rianne Darvell also hit the scoreboard. Narre South remain fifth at 1-4.
Endeavour Hills 14.13 (97) def Black Rock 2.1 (13)
Endeavour Hills stayed level with Murrumbeena on match ratio after an 84-point win over Black Rock. They led 11-0 at quarter time, 31-12 at half time, then broke it open with 5.1 to 0.1 in the third and 5.5 to 0.0 in the last. Sienna Alievski kicked four goals, while Alesha White, Courtney De Kroon and Tabatha Jones kicked two each. Black Rock’s two goals came through Samantha Scheffer.
Bentleigh 3.9 (27) def Casey Thunder 3.1 (19)
Bentleigh moved to 4-1 and stayed in the top-three mix with an eight-point win over Casey Thunder. Casey led 13-7 at quarter time, but Bentleigh held them scoreless across the second and third quarters while building a 26-13 lead at the final change. Casey kicked the only goal of the last quarter, but Bentleigh held on. Emma Stuber, Katherine Harrak and Courtney Schott kicked Bentleigh’s listed goals, with Rachael Hunt, Lana Fullwood and Leah Swain kicking one each for Casey.

Keysborough picked up the tightest result of the round, beating Mordialloc by four points to move to 3-1 and third on the ladder. Keysborough led by two points at quarter time, by two at half time and by two at three-quarter time, before both sides added one goal in the last. Abbey Watkins and Jaymie Summers kicked Keysborough’s goals, while Mordialloc’s goals were both listed as team goals. The result drops Mordialloc to 3-2 and fifth, behind Chelsea Heights on percentage.
Clayton 9.14 (68) def Dandenong West 2.2 (14)
Clayton produced the most ladder-shaping result of the round, beating second-placed Dandenong West by 54 points. Dandenong West were held to one goal across the first three quarters, while Clayton built the lead steadily from 6-1 at quarter time to 34-8 at the final change, before finishing with 5.4 in the last term. Grace Tyshing kicked three goals, Tenielle Potter and Olivia Ferguson kicked two each, and Maggie Collins and Thuy Ngo added one each. Holly Reynolds and Vanessa Fudalinski kicked Dandenong West’s goals.
Narre Warren 17.11 (113) def Frankston Dolphins 0.2 (2)
Narre Warren stayed on top of the ladder with a 111-point win over Frankston, keeping the Dolphins goalless and lifting their percentage to 565.00. They led 26-1 at quarter time, 54-1 at half time and 87-1 at three-quarter time, then added 4.2 in the last. Kiara Harvey was dominant with nine goals, while Tess R Hammond kicked three and Chloe Winter kicked two. Isabella Callinan, Courtney Siwes and Kimmie Baker also hit the scoreboard.
Chelsea Heights 9.11 (65) def Hallam 1.3 (9)
Chelsea Heights moved to 3-2 with a 56-point win over Hallam, keeping themselves in the top-four mix. They started slowly with 0.2 to 0.0 in the first quarter, then took control after quarter time, kicking 9.9 to 1.3 across the final three terms. Mikayla George kicked three goals, Georgia Foreman kicked two, while Kira Perryman, Rada Boskovic, India Boyd and Marnie Philpot added one each. Danielle Fordham kicked Hallam’s only listed goal.

Casey Thunder moved to 2-3 and second on the ladder with a 46-point win over Officer. Casey led 12-1 at quarter time, 15-1 at half time and 33-1 at the final change, keeping Officer goalless across the match. Sheereen D’Costa and Jazmin Davis kicked two goals each, while Natalie Fitzgerald, Alizha Roche and Rachel Redinger added one each. Officer remain 2-3, level on points with Casey and Clyde but behind on percentage.
Endeavour Hills 2 8.9 (57) def Mordialloc 2 3.4 (22)
Endeavour Hills handed ladder-leading Mordialloc a 35-point loss, building the result through a strong first half. They led 15-7 at quarter time and 40-13 at half time, then held Mordialloc scoreless in the third quarter to take a 43-point lead into the last. Amanda Quirk kicked two goals for Endeavour Hills, with Kiara Te Huia, Kelly Baker, Hannah Pel, Lara Nicholas, Bianca Mawdsley and Kailley Rotheram all kicking one. Mordialloc’s goals came through Chloe Ferrigno, Natalie Cardamone and Aaliyah Graham.
St Kilda City 11.2 (68) def Clyde 0.3 (3)
St Kilda City broke through for their first win of the season with a 65-point win over Clyde. After leading 7-2 at quarter time, St Kilda City kicked 8.1 across the second and third quarters to put the game away, while holding Clyde scoreless after half time. Lily Embley was the clear standout with seven goals, while Kyla Groves, Mimi Bland, Bianca McMahon and Zennah Willie added one each. Clyde remain 2-3 and fourth, narrowly ahead of Endeavour Hills on match ratio.
