Dingley ended East Brighton’s purple patch of late with a gutsy 31-point win at Souter Oval. After a low-scoring arm-wrestle for three quarters, the Dingoes led by just two points at the last change before romping away in the final quarter.
“It was a good, solid game and both sides missed opportunities,” said Dingley coach Shane Morwood after the game.
The Dingoes missed some easy shots early and a half-time scoreline of 3-10 told the story for the Vampires.
“Fortunately we kicked straight in the last quarter and that helped,” said Morwood, always the master of understatement.
The Dingoes kicked three quick goals at the start of the last quarter and then another three shortly after and it was game over.
After suffering a serious leg injury last season, Marcus Freeman was back in business for Dingley and provided constant drive.
“Marcus has missed a lot of training and is still way underdone, so he will get better as the season continues,” said Morwood.
The strong work of Stu Cleeve in the ruck also contributed to the Dingoes’ triumph, while Tom Wright was solid at full back in his first game since returning from overseas.
The Vampires had winners in Andrew Clements, Damian Lynch, Tom Jessup and Toby Mahoney.
