From the SFNL Director of Umpiring. Off Season Physical Performance Program

Please see below a program designed by Ryan Gordon, Physical Performance Coach, SFNL Umpiring.

  1. Off Season Running Plan Instructions
  2. Off Season Running Plan
  3. Off Season Alternate Running Plan

(Click to access programs)

The program is primary designed for Field and Boundary Umpires; however, Goal Umpires are welcome to complete the program.

For Field and Boundary Umpires it’s important at this time of the year to “get some miles/kilometres into

your legs”. Cross training is also a great idea, such as swimming and bike riding.

Goal Umpires at a minimum should be walking and cross training where possible.

Please note that if you are an advanced runner please use (2) Running Plan. If you are not an advanced runner you can attempt (2) Running Plan, or as an option you can refer to the (3) Alternate Running Plan.

Please feel free to contact Ryan if you have any questions.

TALENTED FEMALES TO CREATE HISTORY

A number of female SFNL Field, Boundary and Goal Umpires recently attended a special coaching session with SFNL Umpiring Ambassador and four time AFL Grand Final Umpire, Stephen McBurney.

McBurney’s session focussed on the skills needed as an Umpire at community, state and national level. Most importantly he reminded Umpires to have fun and enjoy umpiring.

Other themes covered in the recent coaching session included attitude, teamwork, work rate and match management. Discussion also surrounded the supportive environment, the need for all Umpires to have mentors and the wonderful opportunities that exist in football umpiring in the SFNL.

While Stephen has retired from umpiring at the highest level, he is now heavily involved in assisting the first female Field Umpire to take the stage in the AFL. He personally coaches two female Umpires who are on AFL Female Umpire Pathway Scholarships. Both Umpires currently umpire in the Senior VFL competition.

Interested in becoming involved as a Field, Boundary or Goal Umpire in 2016?

Get in the Game. If you love footy, you’ll love being an umpire.

Community Umpiring Round: AFL Umpires visit SFNL Umpires Training

As part of Community Umpiring Round, three AFL Umpires attended SFNL Umpiring training this week at Bricker Reserve, Moorabbin.

In excess of 120 Umpires took part in match day skills sessions and then had the opportunity to take part in a question and answer session with AFL Field Umpire: Jason Armstrong, Boundary Umpire: Shane Thiele and Goal Umpire: Daniel Wilson.

Wilson, who started his career with SFNL, said that Umpiring brings together quality people, and reminded the SFNL Umpires that there are plenty of opportunities in umpiring. He said that by listening to your coach that you can develop into the best Umpire that you can be. He went on to say that each match umpired should be treated as the most important match on that day.

Jason Armstrong, who started his career in Warrnambool, said that umpiring at AFL level was a “lifestyle” and required ongoing dedication and commitment.

Commencing his umpiring career in South Australia, Shane Theile, explained that he runs daily to ensure that he remains at peak fitness for the top footy competition in the land.
SFNL Director of Umpiring, Peter Mair:

“Umpiring is a great way to contribute to the game.

The Southern Football Netball League not only offers the opportunity to be great community Umpire, but also the chance to make a career at VFL and AFL level.

We offer a fun, safe and inclusive environment for all of our Field, Boundary and Goal Umpires.

The one common denominator is that our Umpires love the game of footy.

SFNL Umpiring is one of the leading Umpiring groups nationally for the number of females umpiring. We more than double the national average, with 15% of our overall list being female.

A number of former players make up the composition of the SFNL Umpiring group. This continues to enhance developing better relationships with Coaches, Captains and Players across the league.”
As part of Community Umpiring Round this weekend, Coaches and Players will shake hands with all Umpires after the toss of the coin on match day.
If you are interested in becoming involved in the game there are still vacancies for Boundary, Goal and Field Umpires in 2015.

AFL South Africa visit the SFL Umpires / Libby Toovey

The 2014 International Cup is well a truly underway and last week the SFL Umpires were lucky enough to have some international stars attend their training sessions. Players and umpires from the South African team joined in with our training and got a glimpse of what it’s like as a footy umpire down here in Australia.

They were treated to a typically wet and cold Tuesday night and watched as the umpires were put to their paces in a time trial. The rest of the night saw games and umpiring activities being played as the SFLUA held a fundraiser for AFL South Africa and particularly their umpiring program. Umpires could win an South African Lions jumper by either boundary throwing the ball into a bin 20 metres away, or bouncing the ball straight up and down into the air. Both of these are much harder than you think, but two of our talented umpires were able to do it. Well done to Joel for bouncing straight and to Daniel for being the only one able to get the ball into the bin.

It was a great night shared by all, where the SFLUA was able to raise over $100 (and counting) for AFL South Africa. Thank you to Skhona, Ian, Cleo and KB from the South African team for taking the time to come to our training. It was great to meet people who are just as passionate about footy and umpiring as we are. A special thanks to all the umpires who participated in the activities and donated to AFL South Africa. The money will go a long way to developing quality umpires and footballers in South Africa.

Results so far: South Africa defeated Pakistan, 23.22.160 to 2.2.14
Next match: South Africa vs PNG at St Mary’s Oval in Geelong @ 12pm on the 16th August 2014
